You are doing everything right. The supplements are lined up on your counter; the wellness podcasts are downloaded; the pantry is stocked with all-natural and organic foods, and yet something still feels off. You are tired in ways sleep does not fix; your gut is bloated; your energy dips like clockwork. What if some of what you think is healing you is quietly holding you back?
The spiritual path asks us to look at what we believe and ask whether it is actually true. Several of the most beloved wellness staples in the conscious community are doing more harm than good at the cellular level. Consider this an invitation to look a little deeper and trust what your body has been trying to tell you all along.
Note: The health insights in this article are inspired by the teachings of Anthony William, the Medical Medium, as shared in his books Medical Medium, Liver Rescue, Cleanse to Heal, and at medicalmedium.com
Fish Oil
Fish oil has long been crowned the king of anti-inflammatory supplements: millions of spiritually-minded, health-conscious people take it daily with total faith, and it shows up in every supplement aisle, integrative doctor’s office, and longevity protocol. However, fish oils could already be rancid by the time they reach us; that rancidity introduces oxidized fats into the body, which actually increase inflammation rather than reduce it.
Beyond oxidation, the fish themselves carry heavy metals and other toxins that concentrate in their fat. When we take fish oil, we are not getting a clean, healing source of omega-3s: we are getting a cocktail of whatever the fish absorbed from polluted waters. Wild blueberries, flaxseed, hemp seeds, and walnuts offer cleaner, more bioavailable sources of plant-based omega-3s that support the body without the toxic load.
Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar is practically sacred in the wellness world; the spiritual community loves it because it feels ancient, earthy, and raw. People drink it first thing in the morning, pour it into detox tonics, and swear by it for digestion, weight loss, and blood sugar balance. ACV is a fermented product, however, fermentation feeds pathogens in the gut, particularly the viruses and bacteria that are at the root of chronic symptoms.
ACV is highly acidic, and that acid can erode the gut lining and tooth enamel over time. For anyone already dealing with digestive sensitivity, mystery symptoms, or chronic fatigue, introducing fermented acids into the system can quietly fuel the very things causing the problem. A gentler and deeply powerful alternative is lemon water, which alkalizes the body, flushes the liver, and supports the lymphatic system without any of the fermentation downsides.
Nutritional Yeast
Nutritional yeast is the beloved cheese-replacement, a savory staple of plant-based kitchens everywhere. It gets sprinkled on pasta, blended into sauces, and dusted on popcorn like confetti at a wellness party. It is praised for its B12 content and its ability to make vegan food feel indulgent.
But here is what many people do not know: nutritional yeast is still yeast. It is a fungal-based food, and it feeds existing fungal and viral issues in the body, even in its deactivated form. For people dealing with candida, EBV, mystery skin conditions, or immune challenges, nutritional yeast can be quietly inflammatory. It also contains MSG-like compounds that can trigger sensitivity in people with already overstimulated nervous systems.
The good news is that B12 can be sourced from clean supplements like adenosylcobalamin and methylcobalamin. And the desire for umami richness can be met with sun-dried tomatoes, or herbs which bring flavor without the fungal footprint.
Kombucha
Kombucha is the fizzy, probiotic darling of the conscious consumer. It lines the shelves of every health food store, gets sipped at wellness retreats, and feels like liquid vitality in a bottle. The fermentation process is praised for producing good bacteria that support gut health.
But kombucha is a fermented and often caffeinated beverage that can feed the same pathogens it claims to fight, particularly when the gut is already compromised. The alcohol content—even in trace amounts—combined with the vinegar base and wild yeast cultures make kombucha a drink that demands more from our liver and digestive system than it gives back. For those navigating chronic gut issues, fatigue, or autoimmune symptoms, it can be a hidden irritant.
Coconut water, fresh celery juice, or hibiscus tea offers genuinely supportive hydration that nourishes without the fermentation complications.
Collagen Supplements
Collagen is everywhere right now: it is in our coffee, our morning smoothie, and our skincare routine. It promises glowing skin, strong joints, and youthful tissue repair; the spiritual wellness world has embraced it as a natural, ancestral kind of nourishment. But the isolated animal-derived collagen powders are not used by the body the way the wellness industry suggests. The body breaks down collagen into amino acids and then rebuilds its own collagen from scratch, meaning the source is not the point.
What the body actually needs to produce collagen is vitamin C, silica, and the cofactors found in fresh fruits and vegetables. Collagen from powders also comes with the same heavy metal and pesticide concerns as other animal products. Wild blueberries, kiwi, papaya, and cucumber are deeply supportive of the body’s own collagen production and do it in a way that works with our cells rather than around them.
Eggs
Eggs have had a complicated reputation for decades, but the wellness world largely rehabilitated them as a protein-rich, nutrient-dense, ancestral food. They appear in most high-protein meal plans, keto protocols, and morning rituals. But eggs are one of the primary foods that feed viruses and bacteria in the body, particularly Epstein-Barr virus, which is connected to a staggering range of chronic symptoms including fatigue, thyroid issues, brain fog, and joint pain.
This is not about cholesterol in the conventional sense. It is about what the pathogens in our system use as fuel, and eggs are one of their preferred sources. For those with mystery symptoms or diagnosed autoimmune conditions, removing eggs is often one of the most significant dietary shifts a person can make. Replacing eggs with hemp seeds, lentils, or chickpeas supports strength and satiety without feeding what does not serve us.
Canola and "Heart Healthy" Seed Oils
Canola oil, grapeseed oil, sunflower oil, and their cousins have been marketed for decades as the smart, heart-healthy alternatives to saturated fat. You will find them in the most well-intentioned health food products, vegan cheeses, and organic crackers. However, highly processed industrial seed oils are viewed as inflammatory and burdensome to the liver because they oxidize easily and are difficult for the body to utilize.
Regardless of where one stands on this debate, choosing minimally processed whole-food sources of healthy fats is a principle shared across many approaches to nutrition. Seed oils oxidize easily at cooking temperatures, and that oxidation creates compounds that burden the liver and cardiovascular system.
These oils are also predominantly omega-6 fatty acids that—when consumed in excess—throw off the omega-3 to omega-6 ratio that keeps inflammation in check. Our body does not need to avoid fat; it needs better fat. Extra virgin olive oil, avocado, and coconut oil are far more supportive options. And when it comes to whole food sources, avocados, hemp seeds, and walnuts offer fats in the form your body actually recognizes.
Closing Note
None of this information is meant to shame or make the wellness path feel smaller; if anything, it is an invitation to make it bigger. To ask harder questions. To trust our body as an intelligent, sacred system that is always communicating with you. The spiritual life and the physical life are not separate, and how we nourish ourselves is a prayer in action.
Medical Medium Anthony William has spent decades compiling information that comes from a higher spiritual source, translated through years of working with people who had been failed by conventional and alternative medicine alike. His work is not peer-reviewed, but it is deeply resonant for many who have tried everything else. Take what rings true for you. Research for yourself. And above all, listen to the body you live in. It knows more than any supplement label ever could.
Affirmation for Healing
I am not starting over. I am leveling up. My body is wise, responsive, and always on my side. I choose nourishment that honors my healing. I release what no longer serves me with gratitude for what it taught me. Every cell in my body is moving toward wholeness. I am supported. I am guided. I am healing. .
Prayer
May I be granted the wisdom to question what I have been told, and the courage to change what is no longer serving me. May I treat this body as the sacred vessel it is, and may every choice I make reflect my reverence for the life within it. May I be guided toward truth, even when truth is inconvenient. And may I extend that same grace to others who are still learning, as we all are. Aho, Amen and so it is.
Aho, Amen and so it is.
